Off the Mat NYC is partnering up with The Somaly Mam Foundation (www.somaly.org) to create a global yoga month in January 2012 to raise awareness and funding to help bring an end to sex trafficking.
Somaly Mam is a survivor of sex slavery who has dedicated her life to saving victims and empowering survivors of sex trafficking. Money raised during this month will go back to the Somaly Mam Foundation, a nonprofit dedicated to the eradication of sex trafficking and modern-day slavery and the empowerment of its survivors. SMF supports victim services, empowerment programs such as job skills and education, and advocacy and awareness campaigns.
This month long initiative will be a global awareness campaign.
Megan will be holding KarmaFlow classes in Ottawa (by donation, min. $10 encouraged) for the month on Jan. in support of the Somaly Mam Foundation. Class times and locations are posted on the 'Community' page, along with all the other classes and events happening here in Ottawa in support of SMF on this page as well.

"I have been to Cambodia and seen with my very own eyes the the prostitution and destitution these people face daily. It impacted me profoundly. After all they have been through in the past, they have kind eyes and big hearts. All they want is a better life. Some cannot afford their children and give them away to people who promise them that they will be working to make money for their family, others straight up kidnapped from their homes. Often they are beaten and drugged. It ends up being a hard life to leave as they are hooked on drugs and need a fix or are not accepted back into their families because of they are shunned for something they had no control over. Somaly Mam Foundation gives them a chance at life. I am honored and proud to be giving back in any way I can to these amazing women who deserve to live with dignity, respect, and love. My prayers are with those who are not yet saved, but that the funds we raise together goes to ensuring they will be soon! Thank you!" ~ Megan
